When Amazon bought ComiXology, I was at the same time pleased and afraid - pleased because that could have (and did) boost ComiXology’s reach, afraid because there was always a significant overlap with the Kindle app, ecosystem and market. For a while, I have signed up for their ComiXology Unlimited service, that for a monthly fee gave you access to an astounding amount of comics - particularly a lot of non-mainstream comics, a great way to discover some interesting independent authors. I have been a customer for many years, starting from when I just had bought an iPad for a job. I love comic books, and I found ComiXology an awesome service, with awesome selection and good prices. I thought this was the right time to issue a plea to you: it’s due time you get rid of the ComiXology app, and ask your customers to just use an unified Kindle app to read their comic books. To me that is a kind of magic.Today, May the 4th, is Free Comic Book Day. “There is nothing like it in comics, the feel of being swept along through a story. “A good story is magical and you really feel that with comiXology’s Guided View with the way the story flows along,” said Joe Hill, author of the Locke and Key series of graphic novels. The update will be delivered as part of a free, over-the-air update on the Kindle app. Per the release, each Guided View experience “is handcrafted by a comic lover to make sure fans can become immersed in reading their favorite comic books, even on the smallest screen.” I don’t use it for every comic I read on comiXology, but it is a nice feature to have, especially with double-page spreads. Since purchasing comiXology in 2014, Amazon has integrated features between the two companies - including the ability to tie your comiXology account to your Amazon account, allowing you to sign in and pay via Amazon, and read most Kindle-purchased comics, graphic novel and manga on comiXology’s app. “We are excited to debut comiXology’s best-in-class Guided View reading experience on Kindle.” “Our customers are passionate about comic books and we continuously look for ways to make their experience even better,” said David Naggar, Vice President, Kindle, in a press release. Amazon has added comiXology’s “Guided View” experience, which allows you to zoom in and read comics from panel-to-panel, to its Kindle app for iOS, Fire tablets and Android.
